I think I can fill out the applications myself. Why should I hire a lawyer?

Some of the immigration forms are not very difficult to complete, which can make the application process seem pretty easy. Unfortunately, this is a dangerous assumption. In order for your case to be approved, you have to be ELIGIBLE. That is what an immigration attorney figures out. Attorneys determine if you qualify, what your options are, and what the best strategy is. Immigration laws are extremely complex. There have been many instances when someone comes to my office after they or a notario filed an application and I tell them that there was a better way to apply. These clients are usually upset at wasting time and money with someone who didn't know what they were doing.

Many facts can complicate a case or make a person ineligible, for example: more than one entry into the US (whether legal or illegal), deportations/detentions, committing immigration fraud, and certain criminal convictions. An attorney will be able to tell you if your case has complications and what is the best way to proceed.

Other benefits of hiring a qualified immigration attorney:

Accuracy: An attorney will file the proper applications with the correct fees to the correct immigration office. Thousands of applications are rejected each year because applicants or notarios do not do things the correct way.

Representation: I and other licensed attorneys can speak for you at court hearings and can represent you at interviews. Also, I always meet with my clients before their interview or hearing so that they are prepared before we go.

Following up: How will you know if your case is being processed correctly and running on time? Attorneys know the normal process and what to do if a problem comes up. If you hire a notario, their work ends when your application is mailed. I always make sure my clients know the status of their case and what the next step is, which gives them peace of mind.

Bottom line: Consult with a qualified immigration attorney before filing any petition or application. Don't risk your time, money, and life based on advice from a non-attorney. Your future is too important.
